There is a misconception that fertilizing conifers is no different from fertilizing deciduous plants. However, since conifers often grow more slowly than deciduous plants, do not build up leaf mass, do not regenerate their crown in spring, and do not form fruits for harvesting (at least in the traditional sense), they require special products.
Usually, fertilizers for conifers are applied at the time of planting, but as trees or shrubs grow, the nutrients in the soil are depleted, and the needles become smaller or dull. This is how the plant signals that it needs nutrition.
Pine, yew, cypress and other conifers do not respond well to excess nitrogen. Therefore, fertilizing with fresh manure, which contains a lot of nitrogen, is excluded. Excessive nitrogen nutrition causes the formation of new shoots, which often do not have time to mature before winter and die. Those that survive get sick, and the plant spends energy on their recovery.
Also remember that you should not fertilize conifers in the second half of summer. The only exceptions are cases when the needles have darkened or started to crumble. However, even fertilizing for treatment should be completed a month before frost.
The main rule for fertilizing conifers is that it is better to give less nutrition than to overdo it. Keep all these nuances in mind if you decide to buy fertilizers for conifers.
